Guillain Barre syndrome

The Guillain Barre syndrome is an autoimmune disease. This means that the immune system, which normally protects the body, turns against it.
It is a rare syndrome, but it can develop into a very serious health condition.

It is usually preceded by a viral or bacterial infection. The patient complains of a sore throat, cough, runny nose or diarrhoea from the bowel.

A few days later, he has numbness and difficulty walking and his legs become heavy. In the following days, the muscle weakness extends to the arms and body. The patient cannot walk, grasp objects with his hands, speak or even swallow.

The immune system destroys nerve myelin which affects the function of peripheral nerves and eventually manifests itself as muscle paralysis.

Weakness in the transmission of nerve signals is created. Information from the brain cannot be transferred to the muscles, and information from the muscles to the brain.

It is a condition that progresses relatively quickly, within 2-3 weeks.

The course of the disease is unpredictable. The clinical picture may deteriorate, paralysis of the respiratory muscles may occur, in which case the patient is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

What does the Wellness Rehabilitation Centre do for patients with Guillain Barre syndrome?

Patients with Guillain Barre syndrome are treated at Euxia immediately after discharge from the hospital.

Their condition on admission is usually severe, with paralysis in the arms and legs, with no ability to get out of bed.

The recovery period is different for each patient. Some patients improve quickly, while some patients have a delayed recovery.

It takes time to recover.

It takes patience, strength and willpower from the patient.

Until a few days ago he was healthy, enjoying life with his friends, family, colleagues at work and suddenly he is helpless, unable to do simple things (activities) like drinking a glass of water and needs help with every activity, personal hygiene, feeding, clothing.

He feels the future is uncertain.

We understand the psycho-emotional shock and are close to it.

We inform about the good prognosis of the disease, support and guide him step by step.

The syndrome Guillain Barre occurs in all ages but mainly in young and middle-aged people.

We need the patient's cooperation to achieve quick results.

At the Wellness Rehabilitation Center, we treat over 25 patients each year with this rare syndrome.

Η Scientific Team of Wellness, who has experience in rehabilitating patients with Guillain Barre, evaluates the problems caused by the disease and formulates treatment programs for each patient. She guides nursing care and service, particularly in the first stage when the patient is helpless and determines guidelines for the prevention of complications (aspiration pneumonia, bedsores, infections, joint adhesions, thrombophlebitis, etc.).

The rehabilitation program includes treatment of swallowing disorders, strengthening of the respiratory muscles, maintaining joint mobility, maintaining muscle feeding, training in functional activities such as getting out of bed in a sitting position, standing up and gaining static and dynamic balance, walking safely without risk of falling.

This is followed by physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, pool therapy, F.E.S. therapy, neuromuscular stimulation therapy, therapy with robotic gait systems, B.W.G.S., biofeedback therapy, therapy with balance training systems, therapy in an environment virtual reality but a decisive role in achieving the goals is played by the support of the psycho-emotional state and the will and cooperation with the Scientific Team of the Wellness Rehabilitation Centre.

All patients will improve their functional level of independence.

More than 95% will recover their lost abilities.

Patients whose recovery is delayed and after discharge from the Wellness Rehabilitation Center, can continue rehabilitation programs as a day hospital with EOPYY insurance coverage until their recovery is achieved.

At Euxia, after discharge we are by your side. There are outpatient clinics with appointments with the medical specialists you need, for monitoring and advice to keep you healthy.
