Acquired Brain Injury
Brain damage in childhood can occur from:
- Traumatic brain injury - head injuries after a traffic accident, a fall or a blow to the head
- Stroke
- Cerebral anoxia, from lack of oxygen to the brain, as a result of cardiac arrest, drowning, etc.
- Brain tumours
- Encephalitis, after infection - inflammation of the brain by viruses - bacteria
Initially, the brain becomes disorganized and dysfunctional as a whole.
The clinical picture can vary from very severe - comatose - to less severe and this depends on the areas damaged and their extent.
The consequences of brain damage
They are different for each child and are relevant:
- Movement: weakness or paralysis in one or more limbs
- Balance: cannot sit or stand up
- Senses: can cause problems
- at Touch: does not perceive what it grasps, does not perceive body parts or hot and cold
- at vision: loss of part of the visual field, double vision (i.e. seeing double or complaining of being dizzy), hypersensitivity to light (light becomes annoying)
- at hearing: temporary deafness
- at smell and the Taste: olfactory disorders create the sensation of tasteless food
- Swallowing: coughing, cannot swallow saliva, water, food
- Communication: cannot speak or speaks in a way that is not understood or cannot be understood, cannot concentrate, gets tired easily, cannot find the words, cannot show his/her feelings or has a delay in processing information.
- Perception: unable to orient in time and place, disturbances in memory, attention and concentration
- Emotions: has mood swings, cries or laughs for no reason, is hypersensitive and sometimes apathetic
What Euxia does for children with brain damage
1. Monitoring Basic Operations
The processes in the brain and the body are malfunctioning. The dysfunction of one process affects the other and the body becomes disorganized and prone to complications such as respiratory and urinary tract infections, restriction of joint movement, disturbances in kidney and bowel function, nutritional and hormonal disorders, etc.
After being discharged from the hospital, children with severe brain damage who are in a comatose state with tracheostomy (to breathe on their own) and gastrostomy (to be fed), are treated with increased monitoring at the Euxia Rehabilitation Centre. The vital - important functions of the body, such as heart rate, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, temperature, etc., are constantly monitored 24 hours a day.The fluids that the child receives and expels every day are also monitored and constantly evaluated by the experienced doctors and nurses at the Wellness Rehabilitation Centre.

4. Intensive rehabilitation programmes
Most patients improve and the next stage is followed by intensive rehabilitation programmes including combined physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, psycho-emotional support, pool therapy programmes, sensory integration, robotic gait training systems, FES therapy, Biofeedback, TVPS therapy, virtual reality rehabilitation.
5. Personalization of treatment time
Rehabilitation programmes and treatment time are individualised according to the problems, symptoms and needs of each child.
At Wellness Rehabilitation Centre, there is no limit to the treatment time per day.
The aim is for the treatment to be effective. For this reason, we spend as much time treating each of our young patients individually as needed to complete their program.
The role of the Parent - Guardian
The parent will face two challenges

B) The participation and cooperation of the parent with the Scientific Rehabilitation Team, is crucial to the child's developmental progression through each step of rehabilitation.

The Rehabilitation Doctors are the specialized doctors who monitor the patient's progress and, in cooperation with the entire medical team, give individualized instructions (rehabilitation program) to the physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and pool therapists, according to the needs and problems of each patient.

Psychological Support
Wellbeing Psychologists assess the situation and provide appropriate support to the parent and the young patient.
Their role in adapting to a new reality within the family is important. They listen to the concerns and worries of the parents and support the child in his/her rehabilitation.
They encourage the efforts of the children and stand by the parents, always reminding them that the family must always stay together as one, both in the easy and the difficult times.
Sensory Integration
It is a specially designed space - environment, so that the child has a lot of stimuli to his senses.
The question is how does the brain perceive and process these stimuli in order to use them in a useful way?
The way in which you will use the sensory stimuli determines the maturity of the brain, and this is manifested in the child's behavior (normal, peculiar, maladaptive).
In the child with brain damage, the processing of sensory stimuli is impaired and daily functioning is affected.
The basic therapeutic goal in sensory integration is to give the child the appropriate stimuli and help coordinate and control sensory information to develop a more organized response.
Assessment and treatment is achieved pleasantly through play activities. Children with neurological disorders, perinatal syndromes, sensory processing disorders, are some of our little friends who are accommodated daily in the Pediatric Department of Wellness.
Biofeedback therapy
It gives feedback to the brain with visual and auditory stimuli, helping to retrain the patient in activities.
Restoration in a Virtual Reality environment
Virtual reality is a form of human interaction with a computer in an environment where objects and events similar to those in the real world are displayed.
The virtual world of rehabilitation therapy is suitable for children.
It triggers stimuli in the brain that create the need to move the arm, leg and torso.
It activates the mechanisms of good neuroplasticity of the brain and is used to improve mental disorders and perception disorders, balance and proprioception disorders, coordination of movements and muscle strengthening.
The advantages of the method are significant:
- The treatment is easily adapted to the needs and abilities of each child depending on the goals of the treatment
- It motivates and activates participation
- It operates in a pleasant and entertaining environment, producing therapeutic effects at the same time
Treatment F.E.S.
It is a high-tech method of treatment of neurological diseases, which uses electrical stimulation of nerves and muscles, in order to treat, functionally restore and maintain tissue trophicity.
With the help of F.E.S. technology, we achieve normal gait without the aid of a splint and at the same time treatment and rehabilitation by training the brain in the correct gait pattern.
Treatment of TVPS
Transcranial Vibration and Peripheral Stimulation is a neuromodulatory intervention that affects the adaptive (good) neuroplasticity of the brain. It is a new revolutionary treatment that enhances and accelerates the results of rehabilitation in patients after brain injury. It relies on the simultaneous application of central stimuli to the brain combined with peripheral deep pressure stimuli to the limbs.
The treatment has few contraindications (pacemaker, defibrillator, or metallic implant in the skull and few and mild side effects. This is a major advantage and makes it completely safe. It has beneficial effects overall on brain function and in particular on balance, gait, motor ability of the patient, cognitive functions.
It is carried out by physicians and the results of the treatment can be seen from the first few sessions.

Depending on the child's condition, pain treatments are selected:

Import procedure
The procedure includes:
- Examination of the patient by a Paediatrician and informing the responsible relative
- Examination by the responsible Rehabilitation Physician (Physiatrist) for children and informing the responsible relative
- Laboratory tests: blood and biochemical tests, urine tests. Electrocardiogram, recording of the patient's vital signs
- Information from the Nurse Manager on how the Wellness Room operates, on the room's facilities and the patient's needs
- At the Wellness Rehabilitation Center, you have your Personal Advisor to solve your questions, answer your queries, and adjust your needs.

After discharge
The recovery of brain damage is not completed with hospitalization at the Euxia Rehabilitation Center.
Discharge is carried out either because the patient is in good condition and no longer needs hospitalisation - stay, or because the EOPYY Insurance Institution does not cover additional time.
The patient, however, is required to continue rehabilitation treatments, with the recommendation of the treating Physiatrist, because the patient has the potential to continue to improve for months, even years.
The rate of improvement is, of course, slowing down.
For this reason, EOPYY provides you with rehabilitation treatment programmes, which it calls "Day Hospitalisation", without accommodation.
Efexia undertakes to facilitate you and prepare all the necessary documentation in order for the young patient to continue his rehabilitation program.
These treatments are fully covered by EOPYY without any financial burden.

Purpose of Wellness
At the Wellness Rehabilitation Centre, rehabilitation treatments are provided on a daily basis without accommodation:
- As day hospital rehabilitation treatments. They include a treatment package of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, biofeedback, hydrotherapy, psychological support
- As special treatment (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychological support)
- As individual treatments
Most of these treatments are covered by the EOPYY Insurance Institution.
Purpose Our aim is to help children develop their abilities.
The non-residential child rehabilitation services at the Euxia Rehabilitation Centre are provided to newborns, infants, children and adolescents.
Initially, the child is assessed for muscle function, sensory functions, joint mobility, neuromotor development, balance, gait, walking, speech, communication, cognitive functions and behaviour.
The main aim of the treatments (as detailed above) is to improve the quality of life of the child and the family. The goals, are functional goals that we set with the family for the child and are aimed at maximizing the child's independence in daily activities.
At each stage of rehabilitation, the treatment plan includes a programme for the child's motor, cognitive, perceptual, emotional and social development.
