Η school bag and the correct way to apply it, has been of concern to the medical community in recent years, as many young people report musculoskeletal discomfort or pain mainly in the neck, back and back. This pain is directly related to the type of bag (backpack, postman, trolley, etc.). It also seems to be related to gender, as girls report discomfort more often.
But there are ways to prevent them the discomfort due to the incorrect fitting of the school bag;
Time
It seems from research that the duration of school bag use is the most important factor in the development of pain. Research also indicates that the length of time should not exceed 20 minutes.
Weight
The weight of the bag also plays a decisive role, as must not exceed 10-15% of body weight of the student. In other words, the bag of a small 30 kg student should not exceed 4.5 kg. For this reason, it is recommended that the student and the bag be weighed before application.
Distribution of Books in the school bag
In addition, uneven weight distribution can cause discomfort. For this reason, it is preferable the sorting of books into heavy and light, with heavy books occupying the back pockets of the bag, i.e. the pockets closest to the student's body. This weight distribution offers an ergonomic way of carrying the schoolbag.
Application of the bag
Finally, the school bag is wise to adapt to the child by having straps that fit the body. In particular, it is recommended to fit the bag 5 cm above the hips. Furthermore, it is particularly helpful if the bag has wide straps, a hard ergonomic back and is made of lightweight materials.
In summary, the Wellness Rehabilitation Centre stresses how the use of the schoolbag requires attention from parents in order to prevent possible future musculoskeletal problems in pupils.
